Memorial Day Weekend rollover accident in Davis County

SUNSET CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A rollover accident in Davis County shuts down the south bound lanes of I-15 for hours Friday afternoon.

Utah Highway Patrol says it was likely wind and speed that caused the driver pulling a travel trailer to lose control and roll several times.

Lisa Taylor saw the whole thing happen. "I pulled up just as the truck was taking the last turn,” said Taylor. She and several other good samaritans stepped in to help the family of three trapped inside their overturned truck.

“There was a guy cutting the little girl out,” said Taylor. “We got her out and tried to keep her mind off what was going on with her mom."

The mother, in her 30s, was pinned under the car. The 11-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with bruises from the seat belt, her father treated at the scene, but her mother was flown in critical condition to the local hospital.

Highway Patrol says they've seen this scene play out time and time again. A travel trailer, carrying expensive, heavy toys losses control and takes down the car that's towing it.

Sgt. Jeff Nigbur said, "When you're carrying the big loads the big trailers you have to take extra precautions that's obvious."

Sometimes accidents like this happen when the towing vehicle is too small for the trailer, but wasn't the case in this accident. It was likely wind and speed that caused the trailer to lose control.

"Speeds are an important one on that,” said Nigbur. “Sometimes people get going too fast trying to get to their destination and these big trailers start to weave and they lose control and there's nothing you can do to correct that."
