Brandon Mark Gillman |
Police say a bus driver scheduled to transport a load of school kids from Utah to California was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence on Thursday. Cedar City Police Lt. Darin Gillman said 30-year-old Brandon Mark Gillman of South Jordan was one of three drivers working for Utah Trailways and contracted to transport the teens from Canyon View High School on their senior trip.
Parents had asked police before the students took off for California to check for anything that didn't belong on board. Lt. Adams said the police told students that they were about to bring a drug dog on board to do the check. He said at that point the Gillman started acting strange. "He was nervous and a little fidgety and made some subversive movements with his backpack." Lt. Adams said police took Gillman off the bus and the drug dog hit on his backpack."When they did a search of the backpack they found drug paraphernalia and prescription pills that were not in a labeled container."
Lt. Adams said outside of the bus police were questioning Gillman testing him. "We did a chemical test - which showed presumptive positive for cocaine."
Police tell us they were shocked by this and certainly glad they prevented something bad from happening to the students down the road. "It was quite disheartening - what could have been - is frightful."
Another driver was called, Gillman was transported to the Iron County Jail and the students still made their senior trip.
