SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Trevor Lewis became Utah's first-ever Stanley Cup Winner Monday night when the L.A. Kings beat the New Jersey Devils in Game 6 of the NHL Finals at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Lewis scored twice in Game 6, finishing the 2012 postseason with 3 goals and 6 assists in 20 games. During the regular season he tallied 3 goals and 4 assists in 72 games.
"He's worked so hard for this," said Trevor's aunt, Melanee Limb.
The Kings became the first No. 8 seed to win the Stanley Cup. They overcame quite a bit to get there, as did Lewis.
Trevor was born and raised in Cottonwood Heights and grew up playing hockey across the street from his home at Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center. He played for the Brighton High School club team for one season when he was 15-years-old. From there he made his way to Colorado where he attended two different high schools while playing for the Colorado Springs Miners.
It's with a USHL team in Des Moines, Iowa where he caught the eye of the Kings who later took the 19-year-old No. 17 overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. After playing for the Kings' junior league team in Ontario, and later the club's AHL affiliate in Manchester, N.H., Lewis got his first shot at the NHL in 2009. But it wasn't until 2011 that he'd play his first full NHL season.
The rest is history.
Lewis is the 8th former Utah high school athlete to win a major title in football, basketball, baseball or hockey. The only other Utahn to play for a team that reached the NHL finals is Steve Konowalchuk. He was a member of the Washington Capitals roster in 1998 when they were swept by the Red Wings.
On top of having their name permanently inscribed on the Cup, it's tradition for each player on the winning team to have 24 hours with the trophy. Let's hope Trevor brings it to Utah for a quick visi
