Tyler Brough suffers from Goldenhar Syndrome, which means he more than likely experienced some sort of vascular event (like a stroke) at 8 weeks into his mother's pregnancy. The cause of Goldenhar Syndrome is not known.
The syndrome left Ty with several deformities at birth, including a cleft lip and palette, along with some paralysis on the right side of his face.

Another of those deformities was an absent right ear, leaving
him with only a tiny remnant of an earlobe.Tyler underwent surgeries as an infant to repair his face, but for years, the Brough family had hoped to get some sort of prosthesis for his ear.
They found out about a procedure called Medpor Ear Reconstructive Surgery, which would insert a synthetic mold on to Ty's skull. Fat cells would then be inserted into the mold, that would then form into an ear.
The rare surgery is costly, and even though the Brough family has insurance, the procedure is considered "out of network" for their health coverage, leaving them with substantial costs.
Ty's mom Ann Brough estimated that those costs would be somewhere between $20-$30,000 after paying for the surgery and living expenses.
Ty's first of three planned surgeries will happen in September. The Brough family will travel to Los Angeles for the procedure, which will further add to their out-of-pocket expenses.
Ty's situation did not escape the attention of The Beckstroms, the Brough's next-door neighbors, who organized the "Pies for Ty" bake sale and carnival to help them out.
Monday night, between 400-500 people showed up to buy all the donated baked goods and to participate in silent auctions. Most of the baked goods disappeared within the first hour.
When the final tally was counted Monday night, some of the neighbors were still gathered in the Beckstrom's front yard.
In the end, it was announced that the "Buy a Pie for Ty" event raised $10,500 for the Broughs.
Cheers and tears were shared as the small Syracuse community reveled in the joy of the moment.
Ann Brough is humbled by the selfless acts of her good friends, who plan to keep the donations coming.
Through June 11 to June 16, anyone who gets a wash at the Car Wash on Main on 507 North Main Street in Layton can donate to the Brough family as well.
