SOUTH SALT LAKE (ABC 4 News) – A storage facility in South Salt Lake is raided by police and health officials after they find people living inside the units; the youngest tenant, a three month old child.
On March, 20th South Salt Lake police, the county Health Department and the city Fire Marshal evacuated at least five storage units at A-1 Storage on South Davis Drive. Christie Andrews has been the manager there for nearly 10 years. She says she never expected to see what she found when police opened up the unit.
“This is where he built his loft right here,” said Andrews. “If you looked into the unit it would be like a wall. You wouldn’t know there was an extra 8 to 10 feet back there.”
The makeshift home in the 10 by 20 storage unit was complete with heating and cooling and décor. Andrews said, “In the loft there was a TV, insulation, carpet and a refrigerator.”
A man had rented the unit out about four months ago, but he wasn’t the only one staying there his girlfriend and three month old baby also called unit 96 home. When Andrews found that out she had to call police.
Andrews said, “After so many warnings and people were telling me he’s in there with his girlfriend and his baby [I thought] okay it’s time.”
When police were called in they evacuated several units. A trap door from one unit lead to another where a man, wanted on a warrant, was found and arrested. The man with the child was also arrested on a parole violation. Andrews said she was sorry to turn him in, but a storage unit isn’t a place you can call home especially if you have a child. “He was a good guy,” said Andrews.
Since the evacuations Andrews said she has had to turn away 10 people who were looking for storage units that were accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week because she fears they may also want to make a storage unit their home.
